WHEN BRITISH COLUMBIA-BASED chocolate and cookie company English Bay was looking to expand its operations beyond its home in the lower mainland of the province, the abundance of affordable industrial land in the Edmonton region beckoned.
In April 2023, the company announced plans to build a new $30-million, 120,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Stony Plain, almost tripling the size of its Delta, B.C. factory. “The land prices in Vancouver for expansion make it almost impossible to grow business,” English Bay CEO Jack Seguin told CTV News at the time.
In the Edmonton Metropolitan Region, centrally located within the province, is an ample supply of land, low taxes, available feedstocks and the ability to get products to market quickly were an attractive lure.
