Owned by the Province of Alberta, the Cold Lake Fish Hatchery produces approximately 65,000 kg of fish annually to support stocking programs in provincial lakes. The facility did not recirculate water and had a substantial energy demand for heating and operation that totaled $1 million per year.
In 2020, Stantec was hired to upgrade the hatchery by implementing a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) and other functional improvements. Completed in November 2023, the project caused a dramatic decrease in environmental waste and energy consumption, saving taxpayers $870,000 per year while Fisheries contribute over $160 million per year to Alberta’s economy.
