The Athabasca River Bridge on Hwy 813: Bridge Replacement on Active Landslide project includes the design and construction of a new bridge to replace an aging structure in Athabasca, Alberta. Replacing a bridge over an active landslide requires innovative solutions. Collaboration between COWI, Tetra Tech and TEC resulted in a resilient and cost-effective design approach. The design harnesses the bridge's natural flexibility by accommodating ground movement through a combination of geotechnical and structural measures, including flexible abutments and modular components. This project will provide a potential alternative approach for future designs in similar landslide locations, reducing costs and enhancing infrastructure resilience.
JUDGES’ COMMENTS
Outstanding innovative solutions for a bridge structure in an unstable geotechnical environment. The degree of difficulty of working away from major centres, and in a known constant landslide condition, makes this project come out on top.
