   Dr. Justin Weinkauf
Professor, Department of Medicine Medical Director, University of Alberta Lung Transplant Program
“I think there are going to be ways to detect organ dysfunction earlier and monitor the immune system better ... post-transplantation. Instead of looking at a piece of tissue under a microscope ... we will be able to delve deeper into
the organ to find out more specifically what’s wrong and how to fix it earlier and better.
It’s been great to get start-
up funding from the University Hospital Foundation (UHF) for some of these projects that translated into larger funding from other granting agencies. One example was a project with ex-vivo lung perfusion in Dr. Jayan Nagendran’s lab where we were able to assess organs outside the human body for a longer period of time and then make a decision about whether the donor organs were transplantable. That’s been a technique that’s now been developed around the world, but we got started because of a donation from UHF. That’s also a major reason why we’re ranked sixth globally
for transplantation research.” The University of Alberta rated sixth in
the world in transplantation research according to subject ranking by the Center for World University Rankings.
Dr. Weinkauf manages transplantation candidates and donors for the University of Alberta Lung Transplant Program. He also oversees the clinical training of transplantation fellows.
