Trains rush past. Skyscrapers and condos tower over the
streets in every direction. Groups of well-dressed people spill
out of the restaurants and onto the crowded sidewalks. But
this isn’t New York City — it’s Calgary’s bustling financial district, in
the heart of downtown, the province’s centre of commerce.
Calgary is Western Canada’s leader in corporate headquarters,
many of them in the oil and gas sector. The city is one of Canada’s
four global finance centres, with 1,400 financial services companies
employing more than 20,000 people.
This pro-business environment has put Alberta at the forefront
of emerging technologies like cryptocurrency, wealthtech and
financial software, with homegrown success stories like Bitcoin
Well, Benevity and Neo Financial. Calgary-born wealthtech
company, Shareworks, was acquired by Morgan Stanley for $1.1
billion in 2019, proving Calgary has the talent and ingenuity to be a
major player in global markets.
Fintech is exploding in Calgary, which is home to more than 150
fintech startups, 28 coworking spaces and 45 incubators and
accelerators supporting Calgary’s innovators and entrepreneurs.
Not to be left out of the financial game, Edmonton is the
headquarters of ATB Financial, the largest public bank in North
America, servicing 800,000 Albertans and businesses. ATB’s
Entrepreneur Centre helps small businesses across Alberta
succeed, with advisors and lending solutions for all kinds of
businesses. In 2024, ATB reported $2 billion in revenue, and
record-high assets of $28.6 billion under administration.
