LIFE &
LEISURE
Clear plains that turn into rolling foothills, boreal forests and big
blue skies. Neighbours wave as they walk down the charming,
historic main street, dotted with shops and culinary delights.
These scenes play out in cities and towns across the province, where
more and more people are drawn to Alberta’s advantages — big
skies, vibrant communities and affordable real estate. In 2024, Alberta
experienced the highest population growth of any Canadian province or
territory, with an annual growth rate of 4.4 per cent.
Alberta is known for its wilderness, but there’s plenty of activity in its cities,
too. With hundreds of kilometres of trails, Calgary is a mountain bike
destination and a great base for some of the best ski and snowboard trips
in the world. It was also recently ranked 54 in the 2025 World’s Best
Cities Ranking. Edmonton also made the list at 65 — as well as being
named one of Canada’s Best Affordable Places to Live by Maclean’s
Magazine. Edmonton boasts the largest continuous urban parkland in
Canada, encompassing 18,000 acres of land, 22 times larger than New
York City’s Central Park.
Not only that, Albertans enjoy low taxes and the second-highest median
after-tax income ($77,000) in the country — so it’s no wonder Alberta
ranks first among the Canadian provinces on the United Nations' Human
Development Index, which measures life expectancy, years of schooling
and gross national income.
And with the distinction of being Canada’s sunniest province (an average
of 312 days of sunshine per year), you’ll want a good pair of shades, no
matter when you visit.
