AGRICULTURE
& AGRI-FOODS
With unparalleled access to some of the best-
growing land, a robust irrigation network
and a thriving food innovation ecosystem,
Alberta feeds the world. About a quarter of Alberta’s landmass is
devoted to agriculture, including beef, canola, pork and dairy.
The province produces approximately 1.6 million tonnes of pulses
annually, holding the title of world’s largest pulse exporter. Oats, oil seeds,
peas — Alberta’s crops supply the world with the goods that become
cereal, cooking oil and potato products. In 2023, cash farm receipts in
Alberta reached new heights at $23.3 billion, a 4.8 per cent increase
over the previous year.
The province contributes more than just raw goods — food and beverage
manufacturing is on the rise, reaching a new high of $24.3 billion in
2023. Alberta’s real GDP for agri-food industies totalled $10.3 billion
in the same year.
Abundant land, an educated workforce and access to global markets
make Alberta an attractive location for agri-food investment.
Alberta is ideal for opportunities in agri-
food. Invest Alberta supports pathways for
global leaders to harness the province’s
rich supply of raw ingredients and quick
market access — reaching nearly 50 million
consumers within a day. P&H Milling
Group’s recent $241 million investment in
Red Deer County reflects this momentum,
with its new flour milling facility boosting
industry investment, facilitating exports and
strengthening Canada’s food sector. Alberta’s
food processing industry isn’t just expanding
— it’s shaping the future of global agri-food.
