As a global leader in carbon capture,
utilization and storage (CCUS), Alberta is
home to a number of projects, including the

Capturing Carbon, Creating Jobs
One of the most promising developments
in slowing climate change in recent years
is carbon dioxide removal systems, which
capture it from the atmosphere and store
it. Montreal-based Deep Sky is investing in
Alberta’s carbon-capture potential, uniting
engineering, design, climate tech and policy
to come up with innovative solutions for
carbon in the atmosphere.
Deep Sky is building the world’s
$1 billion, showcasing Alberta’s leadership in
carbon-capture technologies. This state-of-
the-art facility will produce 465 megawatts
of electricity for the province, helping Canada
meet its goal of net zero emissions by 2035.
The project will generate significant economic
benefits, employing 600-700 construction
workers and 32 permanent staff.

jobs and 15 ongoing operations roles for
the town of Innisfail.
The lab will have capacity to capture
3,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year, with
a projected opening of April 2025.

FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
The combination of natural resources, jobs and carbon mitigation has put a major energy
project on the horizon. Captus Generation, a subsidiary of Calgary-headquartered BTG
Energy, is planning a natural gas plant with carbon capture and sequestration integration —
creating a carbon-neutral energy hub in the Pincher Creek region.
The proposed project has a potential generation capacity of up to 440 megawatts
in the long term, and would capitalize on the benefits of the area due to its nearby
high-voltage transmission lines, existing natural gas supply and rock formations for
carbon storage.
The company sees the plant as an opportunity to create skilled jobs in the town’s
prominent natural gas sector and to bring more investment to the local economy.

Alberta is also home to the world’s first
decarbonized gas plant through carbon
capture. Five and a half hours northwest
of Edmonton in Saddle Hills County,
the Glacier Gas Plant Phase 2 is under
construction. The project will capture
160,000 tonnes of carbon every year, and
permanently store it deep underground.
