As an energy producer, Alberta is known for its oil — the province
is Canada’s largest producer, making up 87 per cent of oil
and gas exports. With capital investment in Alberta’s mining,
quarrying and oil and gas extraction reaching $28.97 billion in 2023, it
shows no sign of slowing down. But Alberta’s contribution to the world’s
energy is much more than just crude oil.
A leader in the global carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)
sector, Alberta has been using carbon storage on a commercial scale
since 2015. And the province continues to drive growth, with the
provincial government investing over $1.8 billion in CCUS projects and
programs over the last decade.
Located near Edmonton, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland is a 582-square-
kilometre energy hub producing fuel, fertilizers, power, petrochemicals
and more for provincial and international markets. With over $45 billion
in existing capital investment in the area, the hub is home to more than
40 companies.
And as the province looks to the future of energy, hydrogen is gaining
ground — Alberta is already the largest hydrogen producer in Canada.
Through Emissions Reduction Alberta and Alberta Innovates, Alberta
will invest $57 million in 28 projects to advance the hydrogen economy,
create jobs and work towards a more energy-efficient future.
