University of Alberta virologist Dr. Michael Houghton won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2020, for his work in detecting the Hepatitis C virus. World-famous diabetes researcher and
professor at the University of Alberta, Dr. James Shapiro, is testing a treatment where stem cells are used to create insulin-producing islets. He feels the cure for the disease is close.
It feels like the stuff of legend, but these are the kinds of breakthroughs that are the result of Alberta providing a fertile ground for medical research. With renowned teaching hospitals in both Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta doctors are leading the way when it comes to designing treatments, procedures and medicines that could benefit the world as a whole.
And that’s just part of the story. The life sciences industry in Alberta accounts for almost $2 billion in revenue, with 35 per cent of
the revenue and investment coming from the United States and international markets. The sector, directly and indirectly, is also anticipated to provide 23,300 jobs in 2023.
