AGRICULTURE & AGRI-FOODS
Alberta is a pantry to the world. This province has the largest agri-food economy in Canada, and exports more than $16 billion worth of agricultural and value-added products to the world each
year. Nearly half of that goes to the United States, but the Japanese and Chinese export markets are worth billions, as well.
Alberta’s biggest export is beef, while grain and oilseed milling and other products like snack foods and functional foods are increasing.
And Alberta producers are seizing upon the fact that they have access to such high-quality foodstuffs. Our food and beverage manufacturing economy generates more than $14 billion a year.
In the northern Mackenzie region of the province, long days of summer sunshine — approximately 19 hours worth at the equinox — means the greenhouse crop industry has grown, and is estimated to be 1.64 million square metres.
Thanks to a wealth of available land, an educated workforce and connectivity in transportation and communication, Alberta is ready to answer the call, as questions about global food security increase.
