COUNTY
We’ve got it all... and we want to share it!
Northern Sunrise County is seeking partners, investors, and entrepreneurs. We’re always investing in our economy, and now we’re attracting and welcoming value-added, agricultural businesses. We have research, business plans and an ideal location. If this interests you, we want to hear from you and see how we can help.
LIFE IN NORTHERN SUNRISE
Nestled comfortably in northwestern Alberta, Northern Sunrise County has 21,000 square kilometres of Alberta’s finest wilderness and agricultural land. Below ground, we have one of the province’s largest oil sands deposits.
We enjoy a desirable quality of life in the countryside, and we’re near the town of Peace River, which has all the amenities for modern living.
A CULTURE OF AGRICULTURE
Northern Sunrise County is an integral part of the most northern agricultural region in the world. Our farming products and practices are as diverse and innovative as our people.
Generations of collective farming knowledge has led to the Peace Country becoming internationally renowned for its superior agricultural products.
The Village of Nampa has a grain terminal, which is one of twelve available in the wider region. We also
have multiple transloading facilities with direct access to CN Rail.
DEVELOPMENT INCENTIVE FOR THE SUNRISE GATEWAY BUSINESS PARK
First year is 75% off municipal taxes, second year is 50% off municipal taxes, and third year is 25% off municipal taxes.
Investors have the advantage of tapping into a well-trained and competent workforce, thanks to the presence of Northern Lakes College and Northwest Polytechnic campus, which provides courses tailored to meet the demands of the local labour market.
SUGGESTED VALUE-ADDED AGRICULTURAL BUSINESSES
Here are a handful of opportunities for value-added businesses in Northern Sunrise County. For research, business plans, or information about getting your value-added business started, please contact us directly.
Canola processing facilities:
Our region is very well suited for growing canola. A local crushing and refining plant would increase financial incentive for our farmers to increase canola production, which will help Canada meet market demands.
Oat processing plant: A facility that produces rolled and steel-cut oats would be ideal in Northern Sunrise County. If interested, we have a business plan available.
Barley processing plant: The Northwest doesn’t have a barley processing plant. Our barley is sent to processors elsewhere in Alberta and Canada. We’re also close to several local breweries that purchase malt barley.
A yogurt, cheese curd or
ice cream factory: Northern Sunrise County is home to Enterprise Lavoie Dairy Farm and Baars Dairy Farm. While other agriculture commodities struggle with prices, weather, and disease, the dairy industry is stable. The challenges lie in keeping costs down and efficient management.

Annual development grants exist for those starting a value-added agri-tourism business. We have conceptual plans for a distillery, winery
or small cheese business, and other businesses may be eligible, too.
